Paula McClain, Duke Distinguished Professor & Dean, Speaks About Geographer Harold Milton Rose

In honor of EducationMakers: Shaping Generations, we salute Paula D. McClain, the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Professor of Public Policy at Duke University. McClain, who also serves as the Dean of Duke’s Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education, speaks about her mentor, geographer and scholar Harold Milton Rose, a groundbreaking scholar of segregation and urban communities.

In 2000, McClain became Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at Duke University and in 2001, she began The Durham Pilot Project, which focused on examining racial attitudes among black, white and Latino Americans in the South. While working on this project, McClain became the third woman and the first African American person elected to serve as Chair of Academic Council at Duke University (2007-2009). She also directs the American Political Science Association’s Ralph Bunche Summer Institute hosted by Duke University, and funded by the National Science Foundation and Duke University. A Howard University Ph.D., her primary research interests are in racial minority group politics, particularly inter-minority political and social competition and urban politics.

McClain has authored a number of publications, including 1990 book, Race, Place and Risk: Black Homicide in Urban America, co-authored with Harold Rose, won the National Conference of Black Political Scientists' 1995 Best Book Award for a previously published book that has made a substantial and continuing contribution. McClain released the first edition of Can We All Get Along? Racial and Ethnic Minorities in American Politics in 1995 which won the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights in North America Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Subject of Intolerance.
