Economic Outlook: China, WB/IMF meetings, Global Markets & Radical Changes In US politics
Published at : October 10, 2021
Weekly Economic Outlook: Andrew Hilton's take on China, the WB/IMF meetings, global markets and the radical changes in US politics that are driving change.
Why you should watch: The global economy is slowing down - sure. But most of the pain is being felt, not by the rich North, but by the poor South, where the Covid virus is still wreaking havoc. In the richer countries, the question is whether inflation is a more pressing problem than growth - and whether it is worth trying to squeeze the last ounce of employment out of the economy while inflationary pressures are building. In the meantime, markets are looking increasingly nervous - as they tend to do in October. This time may, however, be different - not least because the tensions in Washington between 'progressives' and conservatives are ramping up the possibility that a debt crisis might just be on the horizon. More generally, the main takeaway has to be the shift in the political centre of gravity in the US; Washington is starting to look a lot like Europe when it comes to a reliance on the beneficence of government.
In his Weekly Economic Outlook, Andrew Hilton, the CSFI’s Director, discusses the current crisis, its impact on the global economy, and what we may be missing.
Andrew is a former World Bank economist, who also ran a small economic consultancy advising international clients, particularly in the Middle East. He has an MA from New College, Oxford, an MBA from Wharton, and an MA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Thouron Scholar and Kent Fellow.
